Dry Van vs Container Chassis Explained

Two trailers that look alike but work in completely different parts of the supply chain

A dry van and a container chassis both roll behind a tractor on I-95. From a distance, they look similar. But they do different jobs, carry different loads, and operate under different rules. If you're shipping cargo through Port Miami, knowing which one moves your freight tells you what to expect on cost, capacity, and timing.

What a Dry Van Is

A dry van is a standard enclosed trailer that stays permanently attached to its wheels. The trailer, the walls, the floor, the roof, the undercarriage and axles are all one unit. A tractor hooks up to the front, and the driver hauls the entire thing from origin to destination.

Dry vans dominate domestic freight. About 70% of all truck freight in the U.S. moves in dry vans. The standard size is 53 feet long, 8.5 feet wide, and 9 feet tall inside, giving you roughly 3,000 cubic feet of cargo space. They have swing doors in the back and sometimes a side door near the front.

The driver who picks up your load is the same driver who delivers it. The trailer never separates from the cargo. Your freight sits inside a sealed, weatherproof box from warehouse to warehouse.

What a Container Chassis Is

A container chassis is a bare steel frame on wheels. No walls. No roof. No floor panels. It's a skeleton designed to carry one thing: an intermodal shipping container. The container locks onto the chassis with twist-lock pins at four corners, and the chassis provides the wheels and suspension needed to move it on roads.

The container and the chassis are separate pieces of equipment owned by different parties. The container belongs to the steamship line (Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, etc.). The chassis might belong to an intermodal equipment provider (IEP) like DCLI or Flexi-Van, the steamship line, or the trucking company itself. At Port Miami, most drayage carriers pull chassis from pool agreements managed by IEPs.

This separation matters. When a drayage driver picks up your container at Port Miami, they grab a chassis from the chassis pool at the terminal, mount the container, deliver it to your warehouse, wait for unloading, then return the empty container and chassis separately. The chassis goes back to the pool. The container goes to a steamship line depot.

Loading and Unloading

Loading a dry van is straightforward. You back the trailer into a dock door, and the trailer floor sits at dock height (48-52 inches). Forklifts drive straight in and out. A palletized 53-foot dry van loads in 30-45 minutes with one forklift operator.

Loading a container is different. Containers sit on chassis at the same dock height, so forklift access works the same way for palletized cargo. But containers are narrower (7'8" inside width vs 8'2" for a dry van), so some standard pallet configurations don't fit two-across the way they do in a dry van. Floor-loaded containers (loose cartons stacked by hand) take 2-4 hours for a 40-footer because workers have to build walls of boxes from floor to ceiling.

The bigger difference is time pressure. When a drayage driver delivers a container to your warehouse, the clock starts on detention. Most carriers give 1-2 hours of free time at the dock. After that, you pay $75-100 per hour. With a dry van, the driver can drop the trailer and leave. You unload on your own schedule. The driver picks up the trailer later. That drop-and-hook flexibility doesn't exist with containers because the chassis needs to go back to the pool.

Cost Differences in Miami

Dry van rates and drayage rates follow different pricing models because the equipment, distances, and operations are different.

A dry van move is priced by the mile. A load from a warehouse in Medley to a distribution center in Orlando (about 230 miles) might cost $700-900 depending on the lane, season, and fuel prices. Longer hauls cost more per load but less per mile.

Drayage is priced per move, not per mile, because the distances are short. A container move from Port Miami to a warehouse in Doral (12 miles) runs $350-550. A move to Hialeah or Medley is similar. The cost covers terminal wait time, chassis usage fees, fuel surcharge, and the pickup/delivery cycle. Distance matters less than terminal congestion and chassis availability.

Chassis fees Drayage rates include a chassis usage fee, typically $20-35 per day. If your container sits at the warehouse for three days before the empty gets returned, those chassis charges add up. Dry vans don't have an equivalent per-day equipment fee from a third party.
Fuel surcharges Both dry van and drayage carriers add fuel surcharges. Drayage FSC is a flat amount ($30-60 per move) because distances are fixed. Dry van FSC is percentage-based, tied to the DOE national diesel average.

Which One Fits Your Shipment

If your cargo is arriving on an ocean vessel at Port Miami or Port Everglades, it's in a container, and a drayage carrier with a chassis is moving it. You don't choose between a dry van and a chassis for port cargo. The container comes off the ship, goes on a chassis, and gets delivered.

If your cargo originates at a domestic warehouse and moves to another domestic location, it's going in a dry van (or a flatbed or reefer, depending on the commodity). No chassis involved.

The question gets interesting when your cargo arrives in a container at Port Miami and needs to continue to a destination 300+ miles away. You have two options:

  • Transload at a Miami warehouse. A drayage carrier delivers the container. Your warehouse team unloads it (deconsolidates) and reloads the cargo into a 53-foot dry van for the long-haul leg. This adds handling cost ($300-600 for a 40' container transload) but gives you the larger dry van for the road portion and eliminates per diem charges on the container.
  • Dray the container direct. If the destination is within 50-75 miles, keep the cargo in the container and have the drayage carrier deliver it straight to the final address. No transloading, no extra handling. But you need to return the empty container and chassis to the port area within the free time window (4-5 days from pickup) to avoid per diem from the steamship line.
