TWIC Card for Port Miami Drivers: Complete 2026 Requirements

Your passport to Port Miami terminals starts with three letters

Want to haul containers at Port Miami? You need a TWIC card. Period. No TWIC, no terminal access. No exceptions.

Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) cards prove you passed TSA's background check for maritime facilities. Port Miami requires them for all drivers entering secure areas. Here's how to get yours.

What TWIC Cards Do

TWIC cards grant access to secure port areas where containers sit. Port Miami has multiple security zones. The public areas? Anyone can drive through. The container yards where we pick up boxes? TWIC required.

Each terminal at Port Miami checks TWIC cards at the gate. No card, no entry. Guards don't make exceptions for tight delivery deadlines.

Your TWIC card works at any US port. Get it once, use it everywhere from Miami to Long Beach.

Eligibility Requirements

US citizenship or legal status: Citizens, lawful permanent residents, or certain visa holders qualify. Undocumented workers cannot get TWIC cards.

Clean background check: TSA reviews criminal history, immigration status, and terrorism watch lists. Most traffic violations won't disqualify you. Felonies might.

Disqualifying offenses include: Espionage, treason, murder, terrorism-related crimes, drug trafficking, illegal firearms possession. Some offenses allow appeals after waiting periods.

Medical requirements: None. TWIC cards don't require physical exams or medical clearances.

Application Process

Step 1: Online application at tsa.gov/twic. Fill out personal information, employment history, and background details. Takes 15-20 minutes. Application fee: $125.25.

Step 2: Schedule appointment at a TWIC enrollment center. Miami has three locations: Miami International Airport, Port Miami, and Doral. Book online after submitting your application.

Step 3: In-person visit. Bring required documents (see list below). TSA takes fingerprints, photos, and verifies your identity. Appointment lasts 30 minutes.

Step 4: Wait for background check. TSA reviews your application and background. Most approvals take 30-45 days. Complex cases take longer.

Step 5: Pick up your card. Return to the enrollment center when TSA notifies you. Cards cannot be mailed. Bring valid photo ID for pickup.

Required Documents

Bring one document from List A OR one from List B plus one from List C:

List A (identity + eligibility): US passport, passport card, enhanced driver's license, or NEXUS card.

List B (identity only): Driver's license, state ID, military ID, or foreign passport with I-551 stamp.

List C (citizenship/status): Birth certificate, certificate of naturalization, permanent resident card, or employment authorization document.

All documents must be original or certified copies. No photocopies accepted.

All centers require appointments. Walk-ins not accepted.

How Long Cards Last

TWIC cards expire after five years. Start renewal process 60 days before expiration. Renewal costs the same as initial application: $125.25.

Renewing drivers who haven't changed personal information can often skip the in-person visit. TSA may approve renewal applications online if your background stays clean.

Common Delays

Name discrepancies: Your application name must exactly match your documents. "Robert" on your application but "Bob" on your license? Expect delays.

Address changes: Moved recently? Bring proof of current address. Old addresses on documents can slow processing.

Criminal history: Past arrests or convictions trigger extended background reviews. Be honest on your application. Lying causes automatic denial.

Immigration status: Non-citizens face longer processing times while TSA verifies legal status.

Port Miami Specifics

Port Miami has three main container terminals: APM, Seaboard, and PortMiami Terminal. All require TWIC cards for driver access.

Present your TWIC card at terminal gates. Guards scan the card and verify your photo. Keep your card visible at all times inside terminals.

Lost cards cost $60 to replace. Report lost cards immediately to TSA. Terminals won't accept temporary permits or receipts.

CDL vs TWIC

Commercial driver's licenses (CDL) and TWIC cards serve different purposes. CDL lets you operate commercial vehicles. TWIC grants port access. Container drivers need both.

CDL requirements are stricter for some medical conditions and driving records. TWIC focuses on security threats and immigration status.

Get your CDL first. Many drivers discover CDL medical requirements that could affect their ability to work before spending money on TWIC applications.

Tips for Success

Apply early. Don't wait until you need the card. Processing takes 1-2 months minimum.

Double-check your application before submitting. Errors cause delays and may require restarting the entire process.

Keep your TWIC card in good condition. Damaged cards may not scan properly at terminal gates.

Carry backup identification. Some terminals require additional ID verification beyond the TWIC card.
